In this episode, we’re heading to the North Pole to take a look at Bonnie Hunt’s portrayal of Mrs. Claus in the 2024 Christmas action movie Red One.

Starring Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, J.K. Simmons, and Bonnie Hunt, Red One puts a completely different spin on the traditional Santa Claus story. When Santa Claus is kidnapped from the North Pole, a team must race against time to find him and save Christmas.

But while J.K. Simmons brings Santa Claus to life, Bonnie Hunt gives us a memorable and modern Mrs. Claus—one who is strong, intelligent, funny, capable, and very much Santa’s equal.

Bonnie Hunt is known for films and projects including Jumanji, Beethoven, Cheaper by the Dozen, Cars, and Zootopia. In Red One, she brings her own personality and comedic timing to the role of Mrs. Claus while helping create a Santa and Mrs. Claus who truly feel like a team.

In this episode of Mrs. Claus on Film, Santa Matt takes a closer look at Bonnie Hunt’s performance, her relationship with J.K. Simmons’ Santa Claus, and why this version of Mrs. Claus stands out from many traditional portrayals.

Welcome to another episode of “Mrs. Claus on Film” with Santa Matt, where we explore memorable portrayals of Mrs. Claus throughout Christmas movies and television history!

In this episode, we're traveling back to 1996 to take a look at one of the most unusual and memorable Mrs. Claus portrayals ever put on screen: Angela Lansbury as Anna Claus in Mrs. Santa Claus.

Unlike a traditional Christmas movie, Mrs. Santa Claus is a made-for-TV musical starring Angela Lansbury as Anna Claus, the wife of Santa Claus, portrayed by Charles Durning. But this Mrs. Claus isn't content to simply remain at the North Pole waiting for Santa to return.

Anna Claus is independent, curious, adventurous, and determined to make a difference. When she takes Santa's sleigh out to test a new route, she unexpectedly becomes stranded in New York City. Her adventure introduces her to the people of the neighborhood and eventually draws her into the women's suffrage movement.

It's certainly not the typical story you might expect from a movie about Mrs. Claus!

A Mrs. Claus With a Story of Her Own

One of the most interesting things about Angela Lansbury's portrayal is that Anna Claus is presented as much more than simply “Santa's wife.” She has her own personality, goals, opinions, and adventure.

Lansbury brings warmth and kindness to the character while also portraying Mrs. Claus as strong, independent, determined, and willing to take charge. Her performance gives audiences a different perspective on the woman behind the legendary Santa Claus.

Mrs. Santa Claus demonstrates that the Christmas story doesn't always have to revolve around Santa. Mrs. Claus can have her own story, her own adventures, and her own place in Christmas entertainment.
